Synopsis: Wangan Midnight
The narrative is based on the real-life street racing that takes place on the Tokyo Shuto Expressway, a segment of which is referred to as the "Wangan", meaning "bay side" (though it typically denotes the freeway), recognized as the longest and straightest roadway throughout the nation. Naturally, there is also significant traffic to navigate, including a considerable number of large trucks. This makes the racing inherently perilous, with crashes being commonplace. Engine failures are another frequent danger, especially with the extremely high-performance engines. One day, Akio Asakura, a third-year high school student, is driving his Fairlady Z (Z31) when he is challenged by Tatsuya Shima, a doctor, driving his black Porsche 964 Turbo (nicknamed the "BlackBird"). Accompanied by a friend in the passenger seat and two girls in the back, Akio attempts to secure a victory but ends up losing. With a desire to improve his speed, he heads to the junkyard to purchase parts for his vehicle, where he discovers a flawless, undamaged midnight blue Fairlady Z (S30) that is set to be scrapped. Curious about why such a remarkable car is being discarded, he decides to buy it. He quickly learns that the vehicle is extraordinarily fast, equipped with a tuned L28 engine, bored and stroked to 3.1 liters along with twin turbos, generating 620bhp. Additionally, he uncovers that all prior owners of the car experienced tragic accidents, starting with the death of the first owner. The manga chronicles Akio's various experiences, with the main storyline focusing on his ongoing rivalry with the BlackBird for dominance.
